Safeguarding

As Baptists we take the protection of everyone who is part of our churches very seriously. We offer advice and support to all Association churches and and facilitate safeguarding training specific to all roles within Baptist Churches.
Safeguarding means protecting people's health, wellbeing and human rights, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. (Care Quality Commission, Nov 2022)
Every church should adopt safeguarding policies and procedures. Template policies are available on the Baptists Together website. Every church should appoint at least one Designated Person for Safeguarding who leads on safeguarding in their church; one of the deacons/trustees should be the Safeguarding Trustee, who has oversight of the church's safeguarding policies and procedures.
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks Workers who have specific roles or duties with children or adults at risk may be eligible for a DBS check. Deacons / Elders / Trustees also require a disclosure at the relevant level.
Baptists Together use the company Due Diligence Checking (DDC) to undertake these checks for Baptist churches. To access the system the church needs to nominate a DBS Verifier. Details of how to do this are available on the Baptist Together website.

The Association Regional Team and the Safeguarding Lead (Kath Needham - safeguarding@swba.org.uk or 07389 728 669) are available to give churches advice and assistance on any safeguarding matter. This might include safeguarding concerns, safe recruitment advice, help with safeguarding policies and procedures and advice on DBS checks.
